What Exactly Does a Doula Do?
A doula is a professional who dedicates time and energy to supporting you in the pregnancy experience you want. A doula does not perform medical tasks, or recommend one course of action over another, but instead provides all the information you need in an unbiased way to help you make informed decisions about your care.
A birth doula, in addition to prenatal support, joins you usually sometime in early labor and provides emotional and physical support as you move through your birth process. This can be through the use of massage or other gentle nurturing touch, through other comfort measures such as hydrotherapy or aromatherapy, through guided visualizations, through advice for positions during labor, or through just having a supportive knowledgeable person around to hold space. They work with you to create a plan that fits your individual needs and takes into account the things that make you feel most supported. They answer questions, provide guidance for partners who aren't quite sure how to help, and stick around until the family is feeling settled and ready for some quiet time. |
Some doulas also specialize in the postpartum period. They provide more hands on work with helping out around the house, answering questions about your new baby, and making sure you get some rest. Please get in touch if you would like a list of referrals for postpartum doulas in the area.
